ISN Assistant Director for Administration and Finance

Mr. Joshua M. Freedman is the Assistant Director for Finance and Administration for the  Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies (ISN) at MIT. In this role, he is responsible for the day-to-day administrative and business operations of the ISN, primarily focused on pre-award and post-award management for all sponsored projects. This includes, but is not limited to: preparing and assembling all proposals submitted by the ISN; ensuring financial compliance with federal, sponsor and MIT guidelines; monitoring research expenditures for allowability and allocability; providing monthly projections to help ISN principal investigators on the financial management of their projects; and many other aspects of the sponsored research project lifecycle. 

Mr. Freedman acts as the primary liaison between the ISN and a number of MIT administrative offices (e.g., Accounting, Audit, Procurement, Payroll, Human Resources, Research Administrative Services). He also acts at the ISN’s HR representative, handling such matters for the ISN staff. He works directly with the ISN Program Manager and Contracting Officer at the Army Research Office, as well as other government personnel, on a variety of issues such as ad hoc requests for data about the ISN, contracting issues on awards (equipment approvals, extensions, required reports, etc.), helping government visitors get MIT appointments to collaborate with ISN PIs, and number of tasks.

Mr. Freedman holds a B.A. in economics from the University of Rochester (1994) and a Masters of Business Administration and Masters of Science in Management of Information Systems from Boston University (2002). He joined the ISN as the Assistant Director for Finance and Administration in 2002, and with 25 years of research administration experience, has been at MIT since 1994.
